# 48V magnetic track versus mains-voltage track

TWO PLATFORMS · By [Victoria](https://www.jhtlightaccessories.com/pages/about-us-1/), Sales Manager

Magnetic track runs at 48V and holds its modules magnetically; mains-voltage track carries luminaires on mechanical adapters. This guide compares the two published platforms and when each one fits.

**Direct answer.** A 48V magnetic track is a low-voltage rail whose modules attach magnetically and can be repositioned as a layout changes. Mains-voltage track carries luminaires on mechanical adapters and is matched to the rail by circuit configuration. Both are published here, as separate platforms with their own parts.

Adapters and driver boxes are matched to the rail by circuit configuration.

## How to choose between them

- Layouts that change — exhibitions, seasonal retail displays, showrooms: magnetic modules can be moved along the rail without re-wiring the run.
- Fixed layouts with defined switching groups: mains-voltage track with matched adapters and driver boxes, in 2-, 3- or 4-wire configuration.
- Low visual presence in the ceiling: magnetic and small-aperture types are the ones usually specified for that.
- Retrofit into an existing ceiling: confirm the profile and mounting method before choosing, because a magnetic rail and a mains rail do not interchange.

## Key facts

| Specification | Value |
| --- | --- |
| In lighting accessories since | 2010 |
| Factory area | 10,000 m² |
| Minimum order | Housings 300 pcs per size · track and components 100 pcs |
| Samples | 3–10 days for an established model, within 2 weeks in all cases |
| Mass production | 15–35 days depending on order quantity |
| UL / ETL | Not held — no UL or ETL claim is made |

## Questions this guide answers

Can I put a magnetic module on a mains track?

No. The two platforms have different rails, attachment methods and supply arrangements, and they do not interchange.

Does the 48V platform need a driver?

Magnetic track runs from its own 48V supply, which is part of the platform. The exact configuration for a project is confirmed with the enquiry.

Which platform is used in museums?

Magnetic track is often chosen where exhibits change and precise aiming matters; the project note on the solutions page describes that case.
