# CNC, die casting and cold forging: how housings are made

MANUFACTURING · By [Victoria](https://www.jhtlightaccessories.com/pages/about-us-1/), Sales Manager

Track light housings published here are made by CNC machining, die casting or cold forging. This guide compares the three processes across the published housing references and explains what each one suits.

**Direct answer.** CNC machining cuts the body from aluminium bar, die casting injects molten aluminium into a steel mould, and cold forging presses aluminium at room temperature. On this site all three processes are published as housing references, so the choice can be made against quantity, shape and tooling rather than only against appearance.

## The published housing references by process

| Model code | Forming process | Light source | Watts | Beam angle | Surface finish |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| KT006 | Cold Forging | COB | 18W/25W/30W/40W | 12° 24°36 | Powder Coating |
| KT001 | Lathe Aluminum | COB | 20W/30W | 12° /24°/36° | Powder Coating |
| KT002 | Lathe Aluminum | COB | 30W | 12°/24°/36° | Powder Coating |
| KT004 | Lathe Aluminum | COB | 30W | 15°-50° | Powder Coating |
| KT003 | Lathe Aluminum | COB | 30W | 24° \\| 12°/24°/36° \\| 18°-38° | Powder Coating |
| KT005 | Die casting | COB | 30W | 120°Wide Angle | Powder Coating |
| KT007 | Die casting | COB | 15-20W/20-25W/30-35W/ 40W | 12°/24°/36° | Powder Coating |
| KT008 | Die casting | COB | — | 12°/24°/36° | Powder Coating |
| KT010 | Die casting | COB | 10-15W /30W /35W | 12°/24°/36° | Powder Coating |
| KT009 | Cold Forging | COB | 30-35W | 12°24°36° | Powder Coating |
| DL001 | Die-Casting | COB | — | — | Surface Spray Treatment |

## How the process affects a programme

- CNC machining suits lower quantities and shapes that would not justify a mould; it is how the KT001–KT004 references are produced.
- Die casting needs tooling, and is the route that makes sense once a programme has volume; several housing and downlight references are published this way.
- Cold forging presses the body rather than cutting or casting it, published here for the KT006 and KT009 references.
- All three routes end at the same finishing and assembly steps, including driver box, lens or holder and surface finish, which are published per model.

## What is confirmed before a housing programme starts

Body reference, kit contents, surface finish, labels and packaging are confirmed with the quotation. For an OEM or ODM programme the appearance, compatible components, surface finish, labels and packaging can be reviewed; feasibility depends on the product, the quantity and confirmed engineering requirements.

## Key facts

| Specification | Value |
| --- | --- |
| In lighting accessories since | 2010 |
| Factory area | 10,000 m² |
| Minimum order | Housings 300 pcs per size · track and components 100 pcs |
| Samples | 3–10 days for an established model, within 2 weeks in all cases |
| Mass production | 15–35 days depending on order quantity |
| UL / ETL | Not held — no UL or ETL claim is made |

## Questions this guide answers

Can the same housing be made by two processes?

Different references are published for different processes. If a shape has to move from one route to another for volume reasons, that is an engineering question to raise with the enquiry rather than something to assume from the model name.

Which process is cheapest?

That depends on quantity and tooling, so it is confirmed per programme. We do not publish prices, and a comparison without a quantity would be misleading.

Are the housing kits supplied assembled?

The kit contents are published per model — aluminium housing, driver box and lens with holder. Assembly and packing arrangements are agreed with the order.
