# 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire track: what is the difference?

CHOOSING A PLATFORM · By [Victoria](https://www.jhtlightaccessories.com/pages/about-us-1/), Sales Manager

The difference between 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire track is how many conductors the rail carries and how many lighting groups can be switched. This guide compares the three published ranges side by side, with the model codes for each.

**Direct answer.** The difference is switching: a 2-wire rail is single-circuit, a 3-wire rail is single-circuit with an extra conductor, and a 4-wire rail carries three separately switchable circuits. Choose by how many lighting groups you need to control on the same rail, then match adapters to that platform.

## Compare the three

| Model code | Circuit / wire count | Rail material | Conductive material | Inner strip |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| F0430 | 4 Wires 3 Circuits | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| F0440 | 4 Wires 3 Circuits | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| R0410 | 4 Wires 3 Circuits | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| R0420 | 4 Wires 3 Circuits | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| F0340 | 3 Wires Single Circuit | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| F0350 | 3 Wires Single Circuit | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| F0230 | 2 Wires Single Circuit | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| F0210 | 2 Wires Single Circuit | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| RE410 | 4 Wires 3 Circuits | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| RE310 | 3 Wires Single Circuit | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |
| RE210 | 2 Wires Single Circuit | High quality aluminum | Pure copper | PVC strip |

All three configurations are published with their rail material, conductor material and inner strip, as stated per model.

## How to choose

- One switched group on the rail: a 2-wire single-circuit profile is enough.
- One switched group with an additional conductor for the installation: look at the 3-wire single-circuit range.
- Several groups switched independently on one rail — general, accent and display, for example: the 4-wire 3-circuit range.
- Mixed layouts: rails of different configurations can be combined in one project, because each rail is supplied with its own matched connectors and adapters.

## What to send with an enquiry

A rail drawing or a description of the ceiling run, the number of switched groups you need, the mounting method, the target finish and the expected quantity are enough for us to confirm the profile and the accessory set. If you already work with another supplier’s profile, send that profile — matching starts from the drawing, not from a name.

## Key facts

| Specification | Value |
| --- | --- |
| In lighting accessories since | 2010 |
| Factory area | 10,000 m² |
| Minimum order | Housings 300 pcs per size · track and components 100 pcs |
| Samples | 3–10 days for an established model, within 2 weeks in all cases |
| Mass production | 15–35 days depending on order quantity |
| UL / ETL | Not held — no UL or ETL claim is made |

## Questions this guide answers

Can I mix 2-wire and 4-wire track in one project?

Yes, as separate runs. Each rail platform has its own matched connectors and adapters, so they are specified and supplied as separate systems rather than joined to each other.

Does a 4-wire rail need more ceiling space?

The profiles differ by range. The published rail material and dimensions of each model are on its product page; confirm the profile against your ceiling detail before releasing a specification.

Which range is used most for retail?

Retail and shelving layouts often need more than one switched group, which points at the multi-circuit range. The right answer still depends on the layout, so the ceiling plan decides it rather than a general rule.
