# What is a 4-wire 3-circuit track system?

TRACK FUNDAMENTALS · By [Victoria](https://www.jhtlightaccessories.com/pages/about-us-1/), Sales Manager

A 4-wire 3-circuit track is a rail with four conductors arranged as three switchable circuits, so three lighting groups can be switched independently on one rail. This guide explains what the wires do, what it is not, and which published model ranges are 4-wire.

**Direct answer.** A 4-wire 3-circuit track is a lighting rail with four conductors arranged as three switchable circuits. Three groups of luminaires on the same rail can therefore be switched separately — for example general lighting, accent lighting and display lighting — without running three separate rails across the ceiling.

## What the four conductors are for

On a multi-circuit rail the conductors are not all doing the same job. Three of them feed the three switchable circuits; the fourth completes the supply. Which group a luminaire joins is decided by the adapter that carries it, not by where it sits on the rail.

That is why a 4-wire rail and its adapters have to be specified together: the adapter is the part that picks up a particular circuit. On this site both sides are published, so an adapter can be matched to a rail by its circuit configuration rather than by appearance.

## What "3-phase supply" does and does not mean

Three circuits describe how the rail is switched. Three-phase describes how a load is distributed across L1, L2 and L3 at the supply. The two often go together on large installations, but they are not the same thing, and a four-wire rail can be fed from the supply that is actually available.

The arrangement has to be settled with the electrical designer for the project. We publish the conductor arrangement of our rails, the adapters that match them and the driver boxes that go with them; we do not publish current ratings or circuit-protection figures, because those depend on the installation.

## Published 4-wire ranges

## Questions this guide answers

Is a 4-wire track the same as a three-phase track?

No. Four wires describe the conductors in the rail and the three circuits they form; three-phase describes how the supply is distributed across L1, L2 and L3. They are usually used together on large installations, but they are separate decisions.

Can I switch only part of a 4-wire track?

Yes. The circuits are switched separately, so one group can be on while another is off. Which circuit a luminaire uses is decided by its adapter.

Do you publish current ratings for the rails?

No. Ratings depend on the installation and the supply, so they are settled with the project’s electrical designer rather than stated as a general figure here.
